I think the cap is pewter
The valediction "devotre ami" seems more aligned with the latter possibility
complete with hook that is nothing more than a stick with bent nail at the end
showing the wood underneath (easily repaired) and there is a bit of loss of lacquer around the underside edge of the lid

I do think their names having been hand printed in white right across the bibs of their sailor pants is what really makes this one though! 4 15 16" x 3 7 8". Old fold line straight across the center, otherwise good condition.
