I purchased this piece from the estate sale of a former gallerist and great collector on Newbury Street in Boston that included an endless array of wonderful things

I have learned that boxes like this were made to house Mahjong sets

it measures 3 3/4" long x 2" tall x 1 3/4" wide

There is a tiny hole near the top for stringing a thread through to hang it, or I think it could also make a pretty terrific little hand mirror. There is no inset on the back, so a picture or mirror would need to be adhered directly to the frame. There are some scattered small dark spots on the wood and a couple of hairline splits
